Today, they are rebuilding on the same site with board-formed concrete, durable materials, defensible space, and a landscape designed to be both resilient and abundant. The process has become the foundation of hallbuildinc. and a very personal exploration of what it means to build well in Los Angeles.

ALEX has spent more than 25 years in building materials and construction, with a degree in Construction Management and executive leadership roles with one of the world’s largest building materials companies and the largest privately owned construction company in the U.S.

A lifelong interest in concrete, combined with his experience leading a family-owned property management company, gives him a perspective that extends beyond construction to how homes age, function, and respond to their environment.

KAMI’s perspective begins with place. Early life in rural Oregon, where her mother grew much of the family’s food, were followed by growing up in Malibu and years spent with family in landscaping and renovating properties throughout Los Angeles.

Her approach draws from California’s indoor-outdoor architecture, travel throughout Europe and Japan, and the wild fynbos landscapes of her husband’s native South Africa. The result is an emphasis on natural materials, edible and resilient landscapes, and making the most of the relationship between a home and its land.

A home should respond to where it is built.

In Los Angeles, that means understanding the land, climate and landscape, choosing materials

for how they look and perform, and creating a natural connection between indoors and out.
